Welcome

Welcome to the Proceedings of ACOUSTICS 2017. This volume contains papers presented at the 2017 Annual Conference of the Australian Acoustical Society held in Perth, WA in November 2017. This annual conference of the Society continues a long and distinguished history of providing an important forum for the dissemination of information relating to the science and practice of acoustics in Australia.

The title for this conference, Sound, Science and Society, is particularly relevant to current issues in both state and national contexts. Nationally and abroad, major environmental and societal noise issues continue to present across many industry sectors, demanding good science in sound regardless of whether these are considered to reside in analysis, assessment, implementation, communication or regulatory frameworks.

I’m pleased to announce the conference has three plenary and five keynote presentations from an exciting range of experts in their field, as well as a variety of specialist forums and workshops to facilitate discussion and debate of issues that continued to feature within Society activities this year.

These range from public presentations from various experts on the world-class acoustic research into the Swan River, a workshop on Traffic Noise Assessments in Western Australia, to a two day specialist workshop on marine science and acoustics following the conference.

The increased profile of our national conference is also reflected in attendance at the opening from Western Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Svend (Peter) Klinken AC, and we thank him for his interest and support. The organising committee wishes to thank our plenary speakers:

Professor Ines Lopez Arteaga, Mechanical Engineering Department at Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands)

Christopher S. Allen, Johnson Space Center’s Human Health and Performance Directorate, NASA

Dr. David L. Bradley, Professor of Acoustics, Pennsylvania State University

We also thank our keynote presenters:

Dr Hugh Hunt, Reader in Engineering Dynamics and Vibration, Cambridge University, UK

Associate Professor Christian Sejer Pedersen, Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University, Denmark

Justin McGuire, Service Delivery and Asset Management Infrastructure and Services at Transport for NSW

Dr Kym Burgemeister, Principal, Arup, Melbourne

Associate Professor Robert McCauley, Centre Marine Science and Technology, Curtin University.

Thanks also to our specialist workshop convenors Miles Parsons, John Macpherson, Shane Chambers and Alec Duncan. We greatly appreciate the participation and input from all authors and delegates in attendance for their efforts, in what has been an especially busy year. Thank you to those from interstate and around the world for making the trip to Perth.

The level of commercial interest and industry support in the conference has again been excellent and continues to strengthen.  We thank our event sponsors and partners in making this event not only successful in its own right but in supporting future activities of the Society within Western Australia. We thank our valued Bronze Sponsors Pyrotek and Engineering Dynamics. We particularly thank our Gold Sponsors Ortech Industries Pty Ltd, CSR Martini, Embleton and Regupol Australia, for their continued support and leadership in our industry.

Last, but certainly not least, I wish to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of the organising committee, notably Alec Duncan, Terrance McMinn, Kingsley Hearne, Ben Farrell, John Macpherson, Iain Parnum, Binghui Li, Miguel de la Mata, Anshuman Sahu, Miles Parsons, and Norm Broner. Since we began preparations 18 months ago, the committee has put in incredible amounts of time and effort into this conference and we look forward to a successful ACOUSTICS 2017.
